Ex-Giants WR Homer Jones, innovator of the spike, passes away at 82

Previous New York City Giants pass receiver Homer Jones, the very first gamer to increase the football after a goal, passed away Wednesday after a fight with lung cancer. He was 82.

His death was validated by his child, Lacarroll Jones Nickelberry, to KLTV in Pittsburg, Texas, where he was born and was living at the time of his death. KLTV reported that Jones is endured by 6 kids.

The huge play wideout is still the NFL’s all-time leader with a profession average of 22.3 backyards per catch.

Jones captured 224 passes for 4,986 backyards and 36 goals in 87 video games (59 starts) with the Giants (1964-69) and Cleveland Browns (1970 ).

” Homer Jones had a special mix of speed and power and was a risk to score whenever he touched the ball,” stated John Mara, the Giants’ president and president. “… I remember him as a relaxed, friendly person who was well liked by his colleagues and coaches.”

He initially increased the football after an 89-yard goal catch versus the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 17, 1965, for his very first profession rating.

” I had constantly stated that when I made my very first goal, I was gon na toss the ball in the stands,” Jones later on remembered. “They altered the guidelines in the offseason to I believe a $500 fine for tossing the ball into the stands. And as I crossed the objective line my objective had actually constantly been to toss that ball into the stands, however I considered that $500 and I tossed it on the ground. So that was the initial spike right there.”

Jones led the league with 13 goal captures in 1967 to make the very first of 2 straight Pro Bowl choices.

With Cleveland on Sept. 21, 1970, he returned a kickoff 94 backyards for a goal versus the New York City Jets on the launching of “Monday Night Football.”
