all-conner maze moves up into alpine elite

With this success, the slovenian skier not only extended her lead in the overall standings, but also joined an elite alpine circuit. She is only the sixth skier to win all five classic disciplines.

"It is unbelievable! I am at a loss for words. It’s great to be in this club," maze enthused. Before it, only those in st. Anton, american lindsey vonn, who has returned to the world cup, swedes anja parson and pernilla wiberg, janica kostelic from croatia and petra kronberger from austria won in downhill, super g, giant slalom, slalom and combined. Maria hofl-riesch still lacks a victory in the giant slalom.

Only a hundredth of a second was missing from vonn on the podium ("a little bit bose with myself"), there was also praise from her for maze. "Amazing – she skied great today," the overall world cup winner said of her designated successor as winner of the rough crystal globe. Maze has 1289 points, hofl-riesch follows in second place with 744 points. "The lead in the overall world cup is super," the slovenian giant slalom world champion rejoices.

But the public focus this winter is more on the world cup in schladming; hofl-riesch is also hoping for this. In fifth place in the super-G she made a good comeback after the downhill exchange, rebensburg made a good impression in eighth place and veronique hronek booked her world cup ticket in twelfth place. "We’ve said before: the empire strikes back," rebensburg had joked. Even if it wasn’t the big blow, it was at least a good team performance.

Hofl-riesch ("the downhill gave me a little kick") was only 0.10 seconds off the podium in the super-G after a not flawless run. "That is of course very close. I was fourth, fifth or sixth so many times. I hope that the necessary quantum will come at the right time," said the 2009 slalom world champion. "It’s good to see and know that you are so close despite mistakes. If everything goes right, I can be right at the top."On tuesday she wants to make it happen in the floodlit slalom in flachau, then it’s straight on to the speed weekend in cortina d’ampezzo.

Whether gina stechert will be back is questionable. The skier from oberstdorf decided not to compete in the super-G and went to the doctor for a check-up because of pain in her left knee. In saturday’s downhill, stechert, who qualified for the world championships in schladming, missed out on world cup points. She had to miss all of last season because of the consequences of her third cruciate ligament rupture.
